The new iPod nano sporting a FM radio

As we were expecting, some of the rumours from yesterday’s post about the Apple event were true, others not so much. The iPod classic is still around, Beatles still not in the iTunes store and the entry level iPod is still the 2GB shuffle.

So what’s new then?

Firstly, Steve Jobs is 100% healthy. He took medical leave for 6 months earlier this year and told everyone he now has a new 20 year old liver from a person that died in a car crash – he did thank them as he would not be alive today were it not for the organ donation.

So this is what Steve announced on stage last night:

  • iTunes 9 and OS 3.1 for the iPhone and iPod touch
  • iPod shuffle now in 5 colours, including a special edition stainless steel version
  • iPod nano now has camera, mic, FM tuner, larger screen, genius playlist function and pedometer
  • iPod nano now comes with a polished anodized aluminum finish in 9 different colours
  • iPod touch comes in 8GB, 32GB and 64GB versions
  • iPod classic has been bumped up to 160GB

iTunes now sports a new look and feel and includes the following new features:

  • Genius Mixes. It’s like Genius Playlists, but it plays forever like a radio station.
  • App management, letting you set up and arrange your home screens on the iPhone and iPod touch. You can drag and drop to move certain apps or whole pages of apps.
  • Home sharing enables file transfers between up to five local computers of songs, videos and even apps.
  • You can send items in the iTunes Store as gifts, add them to a wishlist, and publish them to Facebook and Twitter

Some of the features of the new iPod nano are a built-in FM radio with Live Pause, iTunes tagging, a pedometer for integrating with Nike+ and a larger display. The camera captures footage in VGA quality (640 x 480) and includes up to 15 real-time special effects including black & white, thermal, security cam, motion blur and sepia amongst others. Battery life is pretty much the same as the previous version of 24 hours when playing audio and 5 hours when watching video.

So, what do you think about all the news coming from Steve? Interested in buying any of the new generation iPods?
