redsteel2Ubisoft, the publisher of the very successful Nintendo Wii launch title, Red Steel, has finally announced, after years of rumours, that the sequel, simply called Red Steel 2, will be released exclusively on the Nintendo Wii in 2009.

The first Red Steel game was used as a technology demo before the Nintendo Wii was launched, and has become one of the most successful games for that platform, even if it highlighted several limitations of the Wii’s controls.  The sequel, Ubisoft promises, will be a revolution in the action-fighting genre.  Red Steel 2 was built from the ground up to make use of Nintendo’s still-to-be-launched MotionPlus technology, an expansion device for the Wii Remote to allow for more accurate and more complex motion sensing.  (See MotionPlus Technology Demo at gametrailers.com).

The Ubisoft press release mostly centered around the MotionPlus technology being used, but also states that Red Steel 2 will be released in time for the 2009 Christmas holiday period. If Red Steel 2 is anything like the first game, it will be a huge success, especially with the added MotionPlus benefits. Red Steel was a katana-wielding, gun-toting first-person shoot’em’up that allowed players to duck and dive and take cover while battling enemies, and was one of the few Nintendo Wii games that made intelligent use of the Wii remote and nunchuck controllers.  With the increased realism that the MotionPlus would add to gameplay, Red Steel 2 will be the MotionPlus game to own this upcoming holiday season.  I can’t wait.
