doom_logoid Software‘s John Carmack announced yesterday that it will be releasing a new “nextgen” version of their Doom franchise for Apple’s iPhone. Slated to be a new iPhone 3G S exclusive, Carmack noted that he plans to have the game playable on “as many iPhones as possible”, which could mean that either the game is *not* going to be a 3G S exclusive, or that they’ll make two versions of the game.

The game is not, however, going to be an FPS, but rather an on-rails shooter, much like the the House of the Dead and Virtuacop games. Making use of the iPhone’s motion sensing technologies, twisting and turning the phone to aim and tapping the screen to fire.

Crunchgear has a small write-up and gameplay video, and IGN have some great screenshots of the demon-killing in action.

If the game is to be an iPhone 3G S exclusive, it will severely limit the amount of exposure the game will have, as the 3G S is faster and more powerful, so the game will likely not work on the older iPhones at all, and having a “watered down” version for the older iPhones just doesn’t seem right. Here’s to them making it available for all the iPhones.
