RSS1 million players in 18 days for free MMORPG
A few short weeks ago, Sony Entertainment Online, the same people that brought us the very popular Everquest and are responsible for the online gaming portal Station, unleashed the fiendishly clever marketing campaign for their new free-to-play MMORPG Free Realms.
Free Realms was vigorously marketed with TV and online ad campaigns, and targeted the younger-than-usual audience of players 10 years and older. The is very family-friendly, features magical fairies and imaginative backdrops and settings, four-legged pets that can be dressed up, battles with fantasy enemies, and allows for parents to manage their children’s accounts in a safe way.
Now, a mere 3 days short of 3 weeks after launch, the game has already reached over one million registered players. The speed at which the game reached the one million player milestone is incredible when compared to more recent games such as Runes of Magic, which reached one million players in just under 2 months. Sony Online Entertainment gave the one millionth player a free lifetime premium account to the game, a special unique space suit item, and 10000 Station Cash. Even though the game is free to play, there are two ways for players to spend real-world money on the game. Firstly, purchasing a $4.99 monthly subscription to allow for extra features within the game, such as creating up to 3 characters, and secondly, purchasing of Station Cash, which can be used in-game to purchase extra items within the game.
Free Realms is also heading to the Playstation 3 over the Playstation Network, no scheduled release date yet. The game is also available as the Free Realms Trading Card game, a real-world trading card game for kids to enjoy.
